Dermatology Virtual Consultation Service

Available on G-Cloud 10

The Dermatology Service allows patients to securely share photos of their skin condition as part of an asynchronous consultation with a remote dermatologist. The photos are triaged using Machine Learning (AI) to determine possible skin conditions, providing a prioritised view of patients who can be signposted to relevant follow-on care.

How it works

  1. Patient Onboarding

Patients with chronic skin conditions are invited to the service by email as an alternative to a future face to face consultation.

  2. Appointments

Patients are given a time slot of up to a week with email and SMS reminders to response to the virtual consultation by taking images of their condition, augmenting the images with structured data, and then securely sharing via the Lenus Digital Health and Care Platform.

  3. Clinical Dashboard

Patient data will become available in the dermatology clinical dashboard, providing health professionals with clinical case management, note taking and appointment scheduling tools, via an interface that displays and aggregates health data across all onboarded patients.

  4. Machine Learning

Using data rules, photos are triaged using Machine Learning (AI) to determine possible skin conditions, providing a prioritised view of patients who can be signposted to relevant follow-on care.

  5. Providing Interventions

Trained algorithms will help to determine if a patient should be recalled for follow up.

  6. EHR Integration and Ongoing Communication

Through the Lenus Digital Health and Care Platform, healthcare professionals can access the patient’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) and augment it with data from the Dermatology Virtual Consultation Service. Case messages can be sent to patients via the Lenus Digital Health and Care Platform.

The Opportunity

It is estimated that more than 4,000 deaths each year in Scotland are due to a related skin disease, while other conditions such as eczema and psoriasis often have long term negative impact on an individual’s quality of life.

As a result, the NHS is under pressure, with more than 283,000 dermatology outpatient appointments needed every year, with 41% of these being first time appointments.
